How do I PLAY?

Gameplay is divided into rounds. During each round, you may take one action. Rounds last for 6 hours, and begin at 7AM / 1PM / 7PM / 1AM Perth time.

You take an action by entering a message on Twitter with certain words in it. The message must contain an active trend (taken from the frontpage) as well as a command (taken from the list below). The rest of the message doesn't matter.

(Note that trends die out over time, so keep track of EDGAR's updates or watch the frontpage for a list of trends currently in play.)

At the end of each round, you will gain or lose cred. The results depend on the actions of all players during that round. When the round is over, you'll receive a direct message with the outcome.

Here are the different commands you can enter. Example messages use the trend edgeoftheweb.

%promote

e.g. hey has everyone heard about edgeoftheweb? %promote

e.g. I just love to %promote edgeoftheweb.

When you promote a trend...

  • You get +2 cred for every other player who promotes that trend on this round.
  • Early adopter bonus: If you promoted before 50% of the other promoters this round, you get +3 cred for every other promoter instead of +2.
  • You lose -2 cred for every player who complains about that trend on this round.

If you direct your message at another player using an @reply, and that player hasn't taken an action this round yet, your rewards change depending on how that player responds...

  • If they promote the same trend, you will not lose any points for complaints.
  • If they complain about the same trend, you will not gain any points for promotions.
  • If they do neither, you will neither gain nor lose any points.

Promoting trends helps them stay active for longer.

%complain

e.g. %complain edgeoftheweb is really getting on my nerves

e.g. I just have to %complain about edgeoftheweb

When you complain about a trend...

  • You get +1 cred for every other player who complains about that trend on this round.
  • Early critic bonus: If you complained before 50% of the other complainers this round, you get +2 cred for every other complainer instead of +1.

Complaining about trends helps push them off the active list, making room for other trends.

%feature

e.g. edgeoftheweb now has rounded corners! %feature

e.g. new %feature for edgeoftheweb: free beer

  • When you add a feature to a trend, it becomes permanently attached to this trend. From now on, every time someone promotes this trend, you'll get +3 cred.

Adding a feature costs 10% of your current cred.

%introduce

e.g. %introduce edgeoftheweb, the most awesomest conference around

Performing this action is a little different: the first word in your message must be %introduce, and the second word must be a new trend. Trend names must be 16 characters or less.

  • This will introduce a new trend! From now on, every time someone promotes this trend, you'll get +4 cred.

Introducing a new trend costs 20% of your current cred.

When you create a trend, it will stay on the active trends list for a minimum of 2 rounds. After that, though, if the ratio of promotions to complaints gets too low, it will fall off the list and become unusable!
